Triumph Spitfire

El Triumph Spitfire fue otro de los modelos basados en la serie Herald para competir con el MG Midget. Ya desde sus primeros disenos sobre el papel se le quiso dar un aire deportivo que nunca llego a buen termino hasta que los directivos de Triumph vieron el esbozo que Michelotti habia dibujado de un pequeno roadster en 1960.

Este proyecto se bautizaria con el nombre de Spitfire en 1962. Una vez acabado sobre un chasis recortado dispuso del motor 1.147 cc. con dos carburadores que entregaba 63 Cv. Se ofrecia con frenos de disco delanteros de serie y era capaz de alcanzar los 145 km/h por mas que su suspension trasera heredada del Herald daba problemas en su maniobrabilidad cuando se tomaban curvas a alta velocidad.

El Spitfire se mantuvo en produccion ocho anos mas que el Herald recibiendo continuas modificaciones. En 1963, apareceria la version Spitfire MKII con mas potencia y un interior mas atractivo. En 1967 el Spitfire MKIII dispuso de un nuevo motor de 1.296 cc. y de unos parachoques mas altos con tal de cumplir las exigencias americanas de seguridad.

Michelotti rediseno su frontal y su interior en 1970, apareciendo el Spitfire MKIV anadiendosele en 1974 un motor de 1.493 cc. que usaba el MG Midget. El Spitfire duro un total de 18 anos en produccion siendo uno de los automoviles britanicos mas emblematicos que en la actualidad mueve a aficionados por todo el mundo. Su facilidad de manejo y su pequeno motor lejos de los superdeportivos invitan al paseo. En total se produjeron 314.000 unidades.

Triumph Spitfire 1977
